TCF Canada re-evaluation suspended from 1 September 2026: what changed, and how to pass on the first attempt

Who is this for

You're booking TCF Canada for IRCC (Express Entry, PNP, or citizenship language proof) and hoped a writing or speaking “re-evaluation / recorrection“ might save a near-miss—especially for sittings on or after 1 September 2026, or if you're registering now with a first-attempt plan. This guide is TCF Canada only—not TCF Tout Public, not TCF IRN, not TEF Canada. Book the wrong product and IRCC won't treat it as TCF Canada.

At a glance

Authorized centres pass on FEI rules: re-correction / re-evaluation of TCF Canada writing and speaking is paused for sessions from 1 September 2026, for about one year (AF Delhi: ~one year; e.g. Concordia mentions planned restart in autumn 2027—check your centre; FEI can change this). What counts is the exam date, not results day. Same-day complaints about exam conditions still go to the centre. Need a higher score? That's a full four-skill retake. Centres often relay FEI's ≥20-day gap between sittings. Results are often ~15 working days after FEI gets the materials (some centres say ~2 weeks; Concordia warns up to ~6 weeks around France summer holidays). IRCC maps each skill to NCLC. Any skill under your required band can sink eligibility or a French-bonus plan—no averaging. NCLC tables: canada.ca. Soft practice path: Claire on tcfcanada.ai.

TCF Canada re-evaluation suspended from 1 September 2026: what changed, and how to pass on the first attempt

Hard takeaway: For TCF Canada sittings from 1 September 2026, don't count on a writing/speaking re-evaluation lottery. Treat that score as final for the sitting—unless you retake.

What "re-evaluation cancelled" means (and does not)

Centres are clear: FEI has temporarily paused demande de recorrection / consultation de copie for TCF Canada sessions from 1 September 2026, for about one year. That mainly hits examiner-marked expression écrite and expression orale—where NCLC 6 vs 7 near-misses hurt most.

What centres relay from FEI (TCF Canada)

  1. Start: sessions from 1 September 2026.
  2. How long: ~one year; Concordia mentions autumn 2027 restart plans (confirm locally).
  3. What's paused: re-correction / re-evaluation-style requests on the papers.
  4. What's still open: report exam-condition problems to the centre the same day; after-results complaints are usually refused under these notices.
  5. Not a workaround: a later email won't bump a borderline speaking or writing band once results are out.
Who does what: FEI designs TCF Canada and the marking. IRCC maps scores to NCLC. Your centre relays FEI rules and handles local admin. Trust your centre + FEI over social media on fees and forms.

We won't invent centre fees, "always goes up" outcomes, CRS cutoffs, or competitor free-bank comparisons. Forum stories aren't policy. If it isn't on FEI, IRCC/canada.ca, or a labelled centre FEI-relay page, treat it as unverified.

Exam date ≠ results date (AF Ottawa-style examples)

AF Ottawa's notice is titled for the "TCF test" broadly; treat it as a centre FEI-relay for candidates who sat TCF Canada there—not a Tout Public guide. It stresses exam date eligibility:

ExampleExam dateResults arrivePre-suspension review?
A31 August 2026mid-September 2026May still be possible within centre deadline
B2 September 2026mid-September 2026Not eligible under the suspension

Matching FEI-relay language also appears on Concordia, AF Delhi, and Université Laval. Re-read your booking centre's page for fees, forms, and emails.

Why this hits immigration files hard

1) Writing and speaking decide many near-misses

IRCC TCF Canada → NCLC bands (writing and speaking /20). NCLC 7 is a narrow band:

NCLCReadingListeningWriting (/20)Speaking (/20)
10+549–699549–69916–2016–20
9524–548523–54814–1514–15
8499–523503–52212–1312–13
7453–498458–50210–1110–11
6406–452398–4577–97–9
5375–405369–39766
4342–374331–3684–54–5

Source: IRCC language test results. You need the required NCLC in each skill—any short skill can sink the file; IRCC doesn't average.

Watch out: "B2" is not the same as NCLC 7. A TCF Canada speaking 9/20 is NCLC 6 on the official chart.

2) The old second look felt like a lottery

Paraphrased (no usernames): sudden centre notices; pay-and-wait with little change; rare big jumps treated like lottery tickets. After the pause, first-attempt readiness isn't optional on a tight timeline.

3) Retakes eat calendar time

StepTypical official / centre-relayed factWhy it matters
BookBusy cities fill earlyYou can't always retake next week
SitTCF Canada = four skills, one sitting for immigration useYou can't stitch skills across attestations for IRCC
ResultsFEI guidance often ~15 working days after materials received; centres may say ~2 weeks; Concordia: up to ~6 weeks around France summer holidaysPlan ≥3–6 weeks by centre and season
GapCommonly stated FEI rule: ≥20 days between sittingsPlan B needs buffer
ValidityFEI attestation often 2 years from issue; IRCC Express Entry also needs results <2 years old at profile creation and PR submissionDon't bank a score without a filing plan
Ready looks like: Stable work above the cliff, plus a retake buffer that still fits your IRCC deadline.

First-attempt playbook

Step 1 — Lock IRCC targets

  1. Program (e.g. Express Entry French bonus / citizenship proof).
  2. Required NCLC per skill (often 7×4 for French-bonus strategies—confirm on canada.ca).
  3. Raw TCF Canada bands: speaking/writing 10–11 for NCLC 7; reading/listening as in the table above.

Aim for stable 11+ practice quality even though NCLC 7 starts at 10.

Step 2 — A diagnostic that stings a little

Do timed listening (once) + reading + a 60-minute writing trio + speaking with interruptions and follow-ups. Score listening/reading to NCLC; judge speaking/writing on task, register, and structure. Do this before you rebuild your calendar—so the cliff skill (usually speaking or writing) shows up early.

Step 3 — Weekly cliff protection

Sample 10-hour week (adapt; keep writing and speaking):

DayFocusMinutes
MonListening + error log60
TueReading + vocabulary60
WedWriting + correction90
ThuListening + speaking90
FriReading + tu/vous drills60
SatFull L/R mock150
SunSpeaking + review60
If the week falls apart: keep short daily listening + one corrected writing set.

Step 4 — Speaking: interaction, not a script

  1. Task 1: expect interruption; keep a short opening you can adapt.
  2. Task 2: real dialogue; switch vous → tu without freezing.
  3. Task 3: claim → reason → example; recover when cut off.
  4. Record yourself; cut silences, loops, and off-topic tangents.
  5. Don't bet on a memorized paragraph you can't rebuild under pressure.

Step 5 — Writing: task, length, register

FEI candidate instructions (Manuel du candidat) give length bands for TCF Canada written expression—confirm for your session. The minute column is a study budget only:

TaskRoleLength targetBudget idea
1Transactional message~60–120 words~12 min
2Narrative / account~120–150 words~18 min
3Compare + position~120–180 words~30 min

Before you submit: all tasks done; length in band; consistent tu/vous; structure over fancy vocab.

Step 6 — Book with a retake buffer

  1. Hard date you need the attestation for IRCC.
  2. Subtract 3–6 weeks for results (15 working-day FEI framing + centre/season caveats).
  3. Subtract seat-hunting time.
  4. If Plan B exists: add ≥20 days between sittings + second results wait.
  5. Then pick the first TCF Canada date.
Booking trap: Grabbing the earliest seat with no results + retake buffer turns "one point short" into "draw window closed."

Step 7 — Test day

From centre pages and FEI docs for TCF Canada: same photo ID as registration; phones and connected devices out; listening usually once; report condition problems the same day; keep convocation and candidate number handy.

Registration and money checklist

  1. Product = TCF Canada (not Tout Public, not Québec, not IRN, not TEF Canada).
  2. Centre authorized for TCF Canada. Computer (sur ordinateur) vs paper is a delivery format, not another exam.
  3. Legal name matches ID.
  4. Fees are centre-set; Canadian sittings often ~CAD $390–$410+ (e.g. Concordia $392; Laval $405)—verify on the portal.
  5. Save receipt + convocation.
  6. Know reschedule/cancel rules before you pay.
Tool tip: One folder—ID, receipt, convocation, centre notice PDF, IRCC chart screenshot.

FAQ

How long is the attestation valid?

FEI often: 2 years from issue. Express Entry: results must be <2 years old at profile creation and PR submission.

I sat TCF Canada on 20 August 2026—can I still request review?

Maybe, if your centre still accepts pre-1 Sep sittings and you're inside their deadline (often ~30 days after results). Follow their form/fee/signature rules. Score can go up or down; fees are often non-refundable.

Is re-evaluation gone forever?

Temporary pause for TCF Canada sessions from 1 September 2026, ~one year; Concordia mentions autumn 2027. Unavailable for those sittings until FEI or your centre say otherwise in writing.

Exam date or results date?

Centre notices (e.g. AF Ottawa's FEI-relay for its candidates) use the exam date.

What about listening/reading multiple-choice review?

This guide is about speaking/writing re-correction. Check your centre's page for any listening/reading review product.

Bad exam conditions?

Report to the centre the same day. After results is usually too late under suspension notices (centres may add local follow-ups).

How long for results?

Often ~15 working days after FEI receives materials; centres may say ~2 weeks; Concordia: up to six weeks ~20 Jul–10 Sep (France holidays). Read your confirmation.

How soon can I retake?

Commonly ≥20 days between sittings. New IRCC attestation = all four TCF Canada skills again—no stitching.

What are the NCLC 7 raw scores?

Speaking/writing 10–11 / 20; reading 453–498; listening 458–502 on IRCC's TCF Canada table—verify live on canada.ca.

Does a B2 course certificate replace TCF Canada?

No. Express Entry needs an approved test. For French: TCF Canada or TEF Canada. Tout Public / IRN are not TCF Canada.

Soft CTA — practise like the TCF Canada score is final

No "guaranteed NCLC." After the pause for TCF Canada sittings from 1 September 2026:

Suggested path: open tcfcanada.ai → start free TCF Canada listening/reading → add timed speaking/writing → check each skill against your IRCC band → if a sitting is booked, spend remaining days on the cliff skill only.

On or after 1 September 2026: pass once, or plan the retake before you need the PDF.
