Express Entry French bonus: you need NCLC 7 in all four skills (TCF Canada guide)

Who is this for

You're building an Express Entry file where French is the plan—extra CRS points, a French-language category draw, or both—and you're sitting (or booking) TCF Canada. This page is TCF Canada–scoped. TEF Canada appears only as the other IRCC-approved French test, for a fair side-by-side FAQ. It is not a TEF prep site, and it is not about ordinary European TCF Tout Public / TCF IRN.

At a glance

On IRCC's CRS criteria, additional French points require NCLC 7 or higher on all four French skills. Then English decides the size: +25 if English is CLB 4 or lower (or you didn't take English); +50 if English is CLB 5 or higher on all four English skills. French-language category-based rounds also ask for NCLC 7 in all four abilities (category page). IRCC does not average skills. One skill stuck at NCLC 6 can wipe the bonus and category eligibility even if the other three look fine. Convert TCF Canada raw scores with the live language test results table. Express Entry French bonus: you need NCLC 7 in all four skills (TCF Canada guide)

Hard takeaway: For CRS French additional points and for French-language category eligibility, all four French abilities must hit NCLC 7+. Three strong skills + one weak skill is still a miss.

What the CRS French bonus actually pays

People say “French bonus” like it's one switch. IRCC's Additional points table splits it into two gates. Both gates share the same French floor.

Gate A — French floor (same for +25 and +50)

You need language-test results that show NCLC 7 or higher on all four French language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

Gate B — English decides +25 vs +50

French (all four)EnglishAdditional CRS points
NCLC 7+ ×4CLB 4 or lower, or no English test25
NCLC 7+ ×4CLB 5+ ×450

Source: IRCC CRS criteria — Additional points. The same wording appears on IRCC's Francophone Express Entry campaign page.

Key rule: The French floor is all four. English only upgrades 25 → 50 (IRCC’s +50 line also needs CLB 5+ on all four English skills). English cannot replace a missing French skill.

What this is not

Category-based French draws: same “all four” idea

Separate from the CRS additional-points table, IRCC runs category-based invitation rounds. For the French-language proficiency category, the public eligibility line is:

Source: Express Entry: Category-based selection.

Watch out: Category eligibility and CRS additional points are related but not identical products. Always re-read the Ministerial Instructions for that round—cut-offs, dates, and wording can move. This guide explains the shared NCLC-7 ×4 pattern; it does not predict the next CRS cut-off.

Paraphrased candidate pain (no usernames): three skills at 7–9, speaking stuck at 6 → still locked out of the French story they planned. That matches how IRCC wrote the rules—not “folklore.”

Decision flow: do you still have a French plan?

Cliff note: Speaking or writing 9/20 is NCLC 6, not 7. Listening 457 is still under the NCLC 7 listening band that starts at 458. “Almost” does not unlock +25/+50.

First vs second official language (FSW-style points)

Separately from CRS additional French points, Express Entry / FSW grids also award points when French (or English) is your first or second official language. On the IRCC TCF Canada calculator rows:

RoleTypical floor called out on the pageIdea
First official languageNCLC 7 bands start earning the “4 points per ability” rowHigher NCLC → more points per skill
Second official languageNCLC 5+ in each of the four abilities → 4 points total (not per skill)Miss one skill → 0 for second language on that calculator

Always follow the interactive table on canada.ca for your program path. The takeaway for this article: each ability is checked.

Why one weak skill is expensive

1) Bonus and category share the same cliff language

Both the CRS additional-points wording and the French-category eligibility line use all four / all 4. A single NCLC 6 speaking band is enough to fail both stories even if reading and listening are NCLC 9.

2) Retakes are full packages for immigration use

Authorized centres packaging TCF Canada for IRCC typically deliver all four skills in one sitting. A higher score usually means a new full sitting—not stitching a better speaking band onto last year's reading. Centres commonly relay FEI's ≥20-day gap between sittings; results often take ~2 weeks, with some centres warning up to ~6 weeks around France summer holidays. Plan calendar buffer before you book a “nearly ready” date.

3) Validity clocks cut both ways

IRCC: results must be less than 2 years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application. FEI attestations are often described as valid 2 years from issue—still verify your PDF and IRCC clocks together.

4) Community near-miss pattern (paraphrased)

Candidates report strong MCQ skills and a speaking/writing 9, then surprise that the French-bonus plan is dead. That isn't IRCC being “mean”—it's the chart.

Four-skill playbook (study advice — not FEI rules)

Labelled study advice. Exam format facts stay with FEI / your centre.

Step 1 — Lock targets on paper

  1. Program path (FSW / CEC / trades + whether you care about French category).
  2. Required NCLC per skill (French-bonus / category story → usually 7×4).
  3. Raw TCF Canada bands from the table above.
  4. English plan if you want +50 (CLB 5×4 on an approved English test).

Step 2 — One diagnostic that hurts a little

Timed listening (once per clip, like the real exam) + reading + a full writing set + speaking with interruptions and follow-ups. Convert every number to NCLC before you rebuild the calendar.

Step 3 — Weekly weak-skill first (sample 10 hours — adapt)

DayFocusMinutes
MonCliff skill (often speaking)90
TueListening once + error log60
WedWriting length + register90
ThuReading + vocab from errors60
FriSpeaking again (interruptions)60
SatFull L/R mock → NCLC map150
SunLight review / rest30
If the week collapses: keep the cliff skill daily + one corrected writing set. Don't “only do comfortable reading.”

Step 4 — Speaking and writing cliffs

For NCLC 7, speaking/writing need 10–11 / 20. Many people train for a stable 11+ so a down day still lands inside 10–11. Memorized scripts fail when examiners interrupt—practise interaction, not a paragraph you can't rebuild.

Step 5 — Book only when the dashboard is green

  1. Hard IRCC date you need the attestation for.
  2. Subtract results wait (often ~2 weeks; centre/season caveats).
  3. If Plan B exists: add ≥20 days between sittings + second results wait.
  4. Then pick the first TCF Canada date that still fits.
Ready looks like: four green NCLC cells in practice, plus a retake buffer that still fits your filing plan—not one lucky mock.

TEF Canada vs TCF Canada (FAQ — fair comparison, TCF-scoped)

IRCC accepts both for French. Claire / tcfcanada.ai trains TCF Canada. Use this section only to choose the right booking product and to avoid mixing score grids.

Do the raw numbers look the same?

No. Never paste a TEF listening number into a TCF band (or the reverse). Example NCLC 7 floors on IRCC's live page:

Speaking10–11 /20310–348

Sources: same IRCC language test results page (TCF + TEF sections). IRCC also warns TEF candidates about the correct column to enter and about a past temporary scoring change (11 Dec 2023–6 May 2024)—follow the live TEF notices if that is your product.

Which one should you take?

Study advice, not a ranking:

  1. Seat + date you can actually book in your city.
  2. Format comfort (computer vs paper options vary by centre—confirm locally).
  3. Prep materials you will finish—switching mid-prep wastes weeks.
  4. If you already started TCF Canada mocks, stay on TCF Canada unless booking force-moves you.
Tool tip: Screenshot your IRCC table (TCF or TEF) next to your practice scores. Mixing grids is a common self-inflicted error.

Can you submit TCF for some skills and TEF for others?

For a normal Express Entry French proof, treat one approved French test sitting / attestation package as your French evidence set—follow what the profile builder asks for. Don't invent hybrid skill stitching across brands.

Is TEF “easier”?

IRCC does not publish an “easier test” ranking. Difficulty talk on forums is not policy. Map your scores to NCLC on the correct table and decide with seats + prep time.

Booking, centres, and retake FAQ cluster

How do I avoid booking the wrong TCF?

Confirm the product name TCF Canada on the centre portal (not Tout Public, not IRN, not a Québec-only modular product unless that is explicitly what IRCC/your program asks for). Computer (sur ordinateur) vs paper is usually a delivery format, not a different immigration exam—still read your centre's page.

Alliance Française vs other authorized centres?

Paraphrased candidate trade-offs: seat scarcity, price, date, travel, and how clear the centre's TCF Canada notices are. Fees are centre-set (Canadian examples on public pages often land roughly in the CAD $390–$410+ range—verify live). Pick the centre that can give you a real date + results buffer, not the brand with the nicest Instagram.

How soon can I retake TCF Canada?

Many centres relay a FEI rule of ≥20 days between sittings. Confirm on your booking confirmation. After the Sept 2026 re-evaluation pause for many TCF Canada sessions, a near-miss more often means retake, not review—see the re-evaluation guide on this site's guide hub when published.

How long for results?

Common centre framing: about two weeks; some warn up to six weeks in France's summer holiday window. IRCC validity is separate from FEI's marking SLA—track both.

Do results stay valid forever?

No. Express Entry: <2 years old at profile creation and PR submission. Plan the sitting so the PDF still covers your likely ITA → submit window.

Checklist before you claim a “French bonus” plan

Who does what: IRCC sets CRS / category / NCLC mapping. FEI runs TCF Canada. Your centre books seats and relays local admin. Trust those over social media cut-off myths.

Soft CTA — see all four cells before you pay denser prep

No “guaranteed NCLC,” no promised CRS cut-off. If your immigration story needs French:

Suggested path: open tcfcanada.ai → free listening/reading → add timed speaking/writing → colour the four-cell dashboard → spend remaining days only on red cells → book TCF Canada when practice is stably above the cliff and the calendar still has a retake buffer.

Three skills at NCLC 7 and one at NCLC 6 is still zero French additional points on IRCC's table.
